Premier C – Div 4

9 July 2011

COUNTRY TOO STRONG FOR BRAVE VAFA

A gallant Premier C-Div 4 VAFA team went down to Vic Country in an entertining contest at Deakin Reserve on Saturday. The second quarter proved the major difference, with the VCFL team ramming on eight goals to 2.1. The Ammo team had begun well, combining beautifully to move the ball forward, but inaccurate kicking prevented early reward. In contrast, the Country team made its early shots count and they took a lead they never surrendered. After the second term barrage, the Ammo team was solid and accountable in the third stanza, just failing to win the low scoring quarter and in the last, competed strongly enough to have won the quarter until some late Country swoops again blew out the margin.

The VAFA best included the Old Essendon livewires Tim and David Biggs, Werribee Districts polished midfielder Nathan Black and his teammate Matthew Dean, who played a blanketing role that earned him the Spirit of the Big V award. Banyule’s Dave Drapac was solid, while Mentonian Gareth Snow was also impressive. Paul Florance, a seasoned rep player and U23 All-Australian from Bulleen Templestowe, also provided good drive, though the obvious forward talent in the VAFA team was held in check by a tight Country defensive unit.

It was a tough afternoon for an Ammos team that never gave up, though it seemed obvious that its opponent, drawn from massive numbers of players, would have competed well with its own senior team.
