BIG V WINS A HEARTSTOPPER
Coach Dean Anderson, whose last two tries to beat the VCFL had ended in last kick disasters, finally got this team over the line at Shepparton on Saturday night. Again, it was a near thing, but the Ammos were the better team and deserved their victory, thie first against the Country since 2011.
The game began at breakneck speed and it was the Amateur team that made the running. Matt Ball and Dan Flaherty looked dangerous early. Unfortunately, there were several shots squandered and the VAFA lead was just five points at the first change, though Jack Watts slotted a beauty from the boundary line. The second term was the VAFA’s best, with Matt Torney, Nick Wynne and Al Austin providing enormous rebound and Ryan Colbert and Cam Howat clear winners across the middle of the park. With winners emerging everywhere, Nick Sautner struck three times in a hurry and they went to the break with a 21 point lead and a big appetite for the kill.
Darkness had well and truly descended by the time the second half began, and under bright floodlights, Jonno Nash streamed through the middle at the 4m mark to slot the Big V’s seventh goal. At this stage, there was every sense that we were about to witness a slaughter. Not so. The VCFL took over the centre clearances and roared into action and the goals came thick and fast. The VAFA surrendered the lead in a hurry as the Country hit targets, but Daniel Strachan won a couple of crucial clearances and Sautner and Sam Dunell restored some equilibrium with their replies.
At the final break, the Ammos led by by four points, with Anderson demanding that his team hang tough and take the game. In a tension filled final term, the teams traded goals. An almost certain mark to the Country’s dangerous goalsneak was thwarted by the long right arm of Hiwad Shakaib, while some excellent work from Sautner enabled Dunell to seal it for the VAFA.
Cam Howat won the Robert “Frosty” Fuller Medal for best afield, Ryan Colbert was voted by the VCFL as the VAFA’s best and Trent Zimbachs won the Spirit of the Big V Award.

President’s Medal: Dan Flaherty VAFA Best voted by AFL Sydney: Josh Agius
Spirit of the Big V Award: Grant Baldwin
With coach Dean Anderson’s previous four games in charge all being decided on the siren, the massive victory was a big relief. Early courage from Trent Zimbachs and impressive forward movement from Andrew Lowcock set the tone. Jack Watts and Luke Wintle, whether in the ruck or up forward, were dominant. Tom Simpson and Josh Agius cut the lines and placed enormous pressure on the visitors’ defence.
The game seemed beyond Sydney’s reach as early as the second term, but it hit back with late goals. The long break put an end to their chances, however, as the Big V defence, led by Paul Wintle and the Old Carey pair Grant Baldwin and Lachlan McQueen-Miscamble slammed the lid on their opponents while Dan Flaherty and David Boundy ran amok in forward line, marking everything and finishing with magnificent goal shooting.
Two years ago the VAFA went to Sydney and had a narrow win. AFL Sydney expected at very least to push the Vics hard and perhaps even to exact some revenge. It was not to be. The home team combined beautifully and never took its foot from the gas pedal in an exhibition of shock and awe that had the home crowd in raptures.

Coach’s comment: “I am really looking forward to this year’s senior representative game against AFL Sydney. The game takes on extra significance given the introduction of GWS into the AFL in 2011. The senior boys did a great job in 2009 beating the EFL, and narrowly losing to the VCFL. Prior to that, we beat AFL Sydney by 5 points. I am very keen to see the recent strong performances continue”.
